Abstract

The transformation of natural landscapes by human activities has created the need to develop and implement new models of forest practices. Shelterwoods and under-planting are now used in many forests of the world, particularly in North American oak stands, the boreal and coastal temperate rain forests of Canada and the USA, and in many degraded tropical regions of Asia and of the Americas. Specific objectives are pursued in each of these biomes, but some are common to all regions, such as moderating the micro-climate, achieving optimal light and competition conditions, and reducing predation by herbivores. Shelterwoods are often presented as alternatives to clear-cutting to improve the survival of planted trees. A meta-analysis of published results of survival and growth of under-planted trees from these biomes is made according to the degree of canopy opening used. Randomization tests are used to reveal optimal levels of shelterwood density, if they exist, and test some of the assumptions found in the shelterwood literature. A majority of studies show a positive relationship between the degree of canopy opening and survival or growth, but which are not further improved after a shelterwood of intermediate level is reached. That level seems optimal in most conditions, and is more apt to fulfill other objectives imposed on today's forest activities, such as the conservation of forest processes and structures, and the reconstruction of degraded stands through the accelerated return of mid- to late-successional species.
