L’objectif principal de mes recherches est de comprendre l’allocation du carbone et le fonctionnement de la croissance intra-annuelle chez les conifères des milieux boréaux et tempérés. Pour ce faire, j’étudie la phénologie des bourgeons, la croissance radiale et la dynamique des glucides et de l’amidon dans la plante tout au long de la saison de croissance. Mes travaux comportent aussi l’étude des stress environnementaux, tels que les déficits hydriques et la défoliation. Dans un contexte de changement climatique, il est très pertinent de comprendre l’effet des stress sur la physiologie, la croissance et la survie des arbres. L’un de mes défis est aussi de comprendre les priorités d’allocation du carbone dans l’arbre et comment celles-ci sont modifiées lors de périodes de stress.

Les différentes méthodologies utilisées dans le cadre de mes recherches se situent dans les domaines de l’anatomie, de la physiologie, de la biochimie et sont toutes à la fine pointe de la technologie. Premièrement, la croissance radiale intra-annuelle est analysée à partir de sections anatomiques permettant de déterminer les sous-processus à l’origine du cerne de croissance, comme les taux et la durée de l'élargissement de la cellule et de l’épaississement de la paroi cellulaire. Ensuite, les relations hydriques sont quantifiées à partir de donnée acquises en continue – comportant par exemple le flux hydrique et le mouvement de contraction et d’expansion journalier du tronc de l’arbre – ou à partir de mesures ponctuelles – incluant par exemple le potentiel hydrique, la conductivité hydraulique et le contenu en eau dans les tissus. Finalement, des dosages des composés carbonés (glucides, amidon, composés carbonés secondaire) sont effectués afin de comprendre l’allocation du carbone à la croissance et aux autres fonctions des arbres.

Les sujets de recherche en cours incluent : (1) la mise au point d’un modèle de phénologie chez les conifères affectés par la tordeuse des bourgeons de l’épinette; (2) le développement de nouvelle méthode de lutte contre la tordeuse à base d’ADN de tordeuse; (3) la détermination des facteurs physiologique menant à la mortalité des conifères défoliés; (4) les liens entre la phénologie et la résistance au froid.
