THÈMES DE RECHERCHE

Mes activités de recherche portent sur les mécanismes qui contrôlent les patrons d’allocation des ressources, ainsi que sur l’adaptation au froid chez les plantes herbacées. Ces travaux incluent l’étude du bilan carboné annuel chez des espèces pérennes, les relations sources-puits et leurs effets sur les taux de croissance et l’étude des mécanismes qui contrôlent la durée de vie des feuilles. Nous nous intéressons également aux facteurs qui influencent la croissance chez les herbacées dans leur milieu naturel en sous-bois, notamment l’impact de la surabondance du cerf de Virginie et celui des changements climatiques. Certaines de ces espèces présentent un intérêt commercial et des projets de mise en culture sous couvert forestier (agroforesterie) sont également réalisés.

RÉALISATIONS RÉCENTES

Croissance chez les plantes printanières : Nous avons montré que les espèces printanières à bulbe et à corme présentent une meilleure croissance au froid. Leur taux d’assimilation du carbone est plus faible au froid qu'à des températures plus chaudes, mais se trouve en équilibre avec la capacité du bulbe à utiliser ce carbone pour sa croissance. Aux températures plus élevées, le taux d’assimilation chute rapidement suggérant une rétroaction due à une incapacité du bulbe à utiliser tout le carbone fixé. Ce déséquilibre mène à une sénescence précoce des feuilles et se traduit par un bulbe plus petit. Nous tentons présentement d’identifier les voies signalétiques qui induisent la sénescence des feuilles lorsque le puits se remplit en ayant recours à une approche métabolomique et à l’établissement du profile phytohormonal. Les cellules du bulbe atteignent une plus grosse taille au froid, nous explorons aussi la possibilité que l’endoréplication soit impliquée dans le maintien de la capacité du bulbe à utiliser et entreposer le carbone.

Impact de la surabondance du cerf de Virginie : Les herbacées de sous-bois en érablière sont très affectées par le broutement répété du cerf de Virginie. Chez les espèces clonales, la survie des ramets est compromise alors que chez les espèces non clonales, la taille des plants diminue de façon importante, ce qui réduit leur capacité à se reproduire. Mais lorsque le broutement cesse, les plantes de sous-bois récupèrent très lentement, du fait de leur faible taux de croissance. Même les semis et gaulis des espèces arborescentes récupèrent lentement. Les impacts d’une surabondance du cerf pourraient donc se faire sentir pendant longtemps.

Culture en boisé : Au cours des dernières années, nous avons mis en place des essais de culture d’ail des bois, de sanguinaire, d’asaret et d’actée à grappes noires sous couvert forestier. Ces espèces répondent bien à une augmentation de la disponibilité de la lumière et peuvent donc être établies dans des trouées, en bordure des boisés ou dans des plantations de feuillus. L’ail des bois pousse mieux sous un couvert qui débourre tardivement (chêne, frêne) que sous les érables. Le pH du sol influence également fortement la croissance de ces espèces qui sont, pour la plupart, des espèces typiques des forêts du sud du Québec, où le pH du sol est de 5,0 ou plus. Dans les sols plus acides, du calcium doit être ajouté sous forme de chaux ou de gypse pour améliorer la nutrition minérale des plantes, sinon elles dépérissent rapidement.
