Abstract

In spite of their abundance, southern Quebec's bogs are facing significant industrial pressure. Little is known of this ecosystem's breeding fauna and such knowledge is crucial in order to have an ecosystem approach to bog protection and restoration. The objective of this project is to assess the possible impacts of horticultural peat harvest on breeding avifauna. Therefore, we studied microhabitat selection by four representative songbird species, in addition to evaluating the reproductive potential of harvested and undisturbed bogs. The four species are selective at the microhabitat scale, as they preferentially used microhabitats with greater tree coverage. Moreover, reproductive success of songbirds may be lower in harvested bogs, since the risk of artificial nest predation was greater in harvested bogs as opposed to undisturbed bogs. The results of this project have conservation implications, as they indicate which areas are of conservation interest for breeding songbirds and allow us to clarify prescriptions for the selection of refuges within exploited peatlands.
