Talbot, J. (2004) Distribution of forest harvesting for peak flow control using variable source areas recognition and snowmelt rates. PhD thesis, Université Laval.

Abstract

Forest harvesting can have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Peak flow augmentations following the harvesting of high proportions of watersheds are possible. However, peak flows eventually decrease to the pre-cut level, following the hydrologic recovery concept. Hydrologic recovery was estimated for various stands using snow accumulation and melt as indicators. The resulting empiric models enable the forester to calculate equivalent clearcut areas, a method which uses regeneration rates for the calculation of cumulative impacts of cuts on stream flow. Moreover, in order to have an optimal protection of forest streams, the location of cuts over the basin have also been addressed. A model that identifies the most sensitive zones to forest operations was developed and validated for three territories.
