Résumé

The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of varying reflectance patterns on the interpretation of dead defoliated trees on a large-scale (1:3000), 70 mm, colour-infrared aerial photograph. A preliminary study of the photo had indicated that photo-interpretation calls changed when the position of the tree on the photograph changed relative to the principal plane and camera view angle. A single photo frame with 54 dead, defoliated Engelmann spruce (Picea Engelmanni Parry) recently killed by spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kby.) was selected for analysis. Based on the optical density values of the tree crowns, a Nadir Normalized Reference Factor (NNRF) was calculated for each dead tree crown. The 90° backscatter viewing cone gave relatively uniform negative NNRF values, while the forescatter viewing cone gave highly variable positive NNRF values. The 90° cones at right angles to incident light also gave variable positive ratios. Trees less than 15° off-nadir also had uniform NNRF values, while those more than 15° off-nadir had variable NNRF values. After interpreting the aerial photographs, the conclusion was made that data recovery should be restricted to the backscatter viewing cone or the objects of interest at less than 15° off-nadir.
