🙋‍♂️ ABOUT ME

I am a masters student at the Universite du Quebec en Abitibi-Temiscamingue, originally from Bangladesh. Before pursuing my second masters with the UQAT I had a Bachelor and Masters in Forestry from the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

At the beginning of my undergrad, I was interested in herpetology which later extended to mammal ecology. I am broadly interested in the field of community and spatial ecology. Besides, I have an interest in data science and would love to connect ecological model to solve conservation problem.

I am working with the Creative Conservation Alliance to conduct study on the Chinese pangolin and Elongated tortoise. I am also one of the co-investigators for a research project on the carnivore ecology where we are aiming to perform activity pattern analysis, pair-wise co-occurrence on small mammals using camera trap and sign survey method.

✍ CURRENT PROJECT

The spatial configuration of individual trees can affect their growth and survival at a fine scale and change the forest composition and structure. Thus, understanding the stand spatial dynamics is crucial for forest management. The use of SORTIE-ND, a spatially explicit individual-based forest simulator, allows predictions of the growth, mortality, and recruitment of individual trees at a stand scale by emulating gap dynamics.

Our research aims to determine the changes in the spatial structure of forest stands using SORTIE-ND and evaluate the model accuracy by comparing the spatial structure of simulated and observed stands. The simulations will be done and validated with two sets of empirical data from stands located in the boreal mixed woods of eastern Canada. These stands were formed after eight wildfires since 1760 and represent a chronosequence of 249 years of forest succession, which will serve as input and validation data for the models. We calculated the homogeneous L function of spatial structure for each simulated stand (with initial conditions based on empirical data from younger stands), and compared it with the inhomogeneous L function of observed data to check whether the SORTIE-ND model can produce a spatial structure similar to that of the observed stands.

For the three most common species in the observed stands, SORTIE-ND was able to reproduce the same spatial pattern for single species and pairs of species. However, the study did not focus on all the tree species of boreal mixed wood and future research on the model performance for other species need to be evaluated.
