THÈMES DE RECHERCHE
Nos activités portent sur les mécanismes de formation du bois chez les arbres forestiers et les divers aspects de la génétique qui contrôlent les caractéristiques du bois ayant un impact sur le rendement et la performance des produits forestiers. Je vise de plus à développer un champ d’expertise en génomique fonctionnelle appliquée aux arbres forestiers, permettant d’accélérer l’amélioration génétique des arbres et aussi, d’apporter de nouvelles méthodes pour l’analyse de divers phénomènes liés à la croissance, au développement, à la physiologie ainsi qu’à l’adaptation des arbres.
Il est membre de l’Institut de biologie intégrative et des systèmes à l’Université Laval. En plus de ses activités d’enseignement et de recherche, il a été vice-doyen de la Faculté de foresterie, géographie et géomatique de l’Université Laval (2012-2014).
RÉALISATIONS RÉCENTES
Nos travaux s’articulent autour de quatre thèmes reliés à la génétique et à l’amélioration des arbres forestiers :
- la génétique et la biologie moléculaire de la synthèse de la lignine et son impact sur la fabrication de la pâte à papier;
- l’application de la génomique aux arbres forestiers;
- la formation du bois chez les arbres et son contrôle moléculaire;
- le contrôle génétique de l’embryogénèse somatique chez le pin.
Nous avons identifié un pin portant une mutation génique au niveau d’une des enzymes normalement requises pour la synthèse de la lignine. Nos études ont démontré l’importante plasticité au niveau de la synthèse de la lignine, une des composantes principales du bois chez les arbres.
Nous avons également démontré que les pins ayant cette mutation génique sont plus faciles à déligner (réduire en pâte à papier) que les pins ‘normaux’ comparables, et que les papiers obtenus des ces arbres sont légèrement plus forts.
Au sein d’un groupe de recherche multi-institutionnel sur la génomique du pin, nous développons des méthodes pour l’analyse simultanée de l’expression de milliers de gènes, par l’emploi de la technique des microarray. Une première série d’expériences réalisées en 2001 à l’aide de microarray de gènes du pin vise à démontrer les applications potentielles de ces méthodes pour l’étude de la formation du bois et de son contrôle génétique. Cette approche prometteuse permet déjà d’analyser les mécanismes par lesquels les arbres s’adaptent aux conditions environnementales en modulant l’expression de divers gènes pendant la saison de croissance ou encore suite à une modification des conditions de culture.
Nos études sur l’embryogénèse somatique du pin ont mis en évidence le contrôle génétique pour l’induction des cultures embryogènes, suivant un mode d’action génétique surtout additif. Cette analyse génétique a aussi établi un lien entre le phénomène naturel de polyembronie chez les semences de pin et la capacité de produire une culture embryogène.
